Upland Cress

(Barbarea verna)

The most common question we get asked is “Is upland cress the same as watercress?”.

Upland cress is not the same as watercress but does look like it especially when the plant is very young. They are both from the same nutrient rich Brassica family – watercress is from the genus Nasturtium and upland cress is from the genus Barbarea.

Upland cress has a sharp peppery flavour and is popular in salad. It is said that upland cress has more vitamin C than oranges and more vitamin A than broccoli. It is also rich in antioxidants. Since it is also rich in vitamin C, E, iron and calcium it is highly recommended for addition to your daily smoothie. The beautiful curled dark green leaves are often used for garnishing.

We use upland cress the same way we would watercress or spinach. It can be eaten raw or cooked.
