Our Approach

On our farm we continuously work towards using more ecologically sensible practices. We strive to be environmentally friendly and use a green approach to growing crops that is safe and healthy for consumption while maintaining a positive impact on the environment.

Weed control:

We tend our crops with care, making sure they are healthy and have the best possible environment for growth. Regular hand weeding is part of this routine to ensure that our crop are not competing with weeds for valuable nutrients. We also use extensive mulching to further reduce weeds.

We like mulching because it has the added benefit of naturally regulating the soil temperature and moisture. Weed control is extremely important to us because weeds can harbour many diseases such as blackspot, mildew, as well as disease carrying insects such as aphids and leafhoppers. Hence reducing weeds also reduces the need for insecticides. Some of our chemical free approach includes physically removing weakened crops, use of chemical free fly traps and using insects to combat aphids.

Water:

We irrigate with rain water and water from our own bore. Using a computerised water irrigation system allows us to dispense the optimal requirement of water and nutrients to our crops. It ensures levels are properly maintained without unnecessary waste. In addition to this, we have five greenhouses that utilise a hydroponic system which is highly sustainable.

To naturally increase crop yield, we installed the Grander water revitalisation system. This technology has been used successfully by farmers in Europe to increase their crop yields and we believe we are the first in New Zealand to use it.

Perfect environment for each crop:

We have 14 greenhouses allowing us to meet the unique requirements for each herb in terms of nutrient levels, water and sunlight.

“Organic” approach:

We focus on keeping our crop healthy by using mainly organic compost and fertilisers and excluding or strictly limiting the use of chemical based fertilisers. In addition, we are working with scientists to implement the latest organic strategy to improve plant health.

Food safety and quality standard of our crops:

Every day our customers rely on us to guarantee the safety and quality of our crops supplied to them. The Herb Patch holds a NZGAP Certificate. GAP stands for Good Agriculture Practice. It ensures practices are in place that address the risks associated with food safety, environment, workers welfare and product quality.

Eliminate waste:
In regards to waste, we practice the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
